Art John

Art John

If someone who mass-produces art on the cheap is an art whore, would that make me an art John? I’ve bought far more art than I have walls to hang them on or curio cabinets to place them in. Guess it’s better than buying smack or being a real John, but I guess it’s an addition of sorts.

Strangely enough, there are few famous artists that I like enough even to buy prints. I guess I’m much more into “outsider” art, although many art whores call their art outsider when they should really call it crap.

Much of my art has ended up in my office/cube (it’s a large office split into three cubes with modular furniture.) Beats the hell out of Successories.

Oh, and what did John Doe do to become so famous? :^)

Wal*Mart sux, but what’s new?

Ok, I may get crucified by my Union bretheren, but I don’t see the huge threat of Wal*Mart. Sure, they are nasty to their employees, they fire anyone who tries to organize, and all that. I guess that ’cause they’re the big boys on the block, everyone goes after ‘em. But is Wal*Mart any different than K-Mart, Target, Sears, Pennys, CostCo, Safeway, Toys-r-Us, etc? They all “killed the small guy” and now some on this list are the next level small guy. Few are friendly to employees (speak to the SoCal Safeway employees, after their mixed results in the last contract negotiations.)

Now I must say, however, that I cannot stand shopping at Wal*Mart. I don’t know, I guess I’m too much of a snob…But their merchandise is low quality, their selection surprisingly limited, their staff often useless, their lines all too long and slow.

Something tells me that Wal*Mart will go the way of K-Mart and the other big stores before ‘em. Chain stores have fad consumers flock to ‘em, then they retain the diehards but the next big thing comes along and everyone moves on. Ok, Wal*Mart may not end up as bad off as K-Mart, but if I were playing the stock market, I wouldn’t be buying their stock. Matter of time, I say.

Lastly, I do feel that Wal*Mart is doing a great deed to society in the Katrina disaster. Their logistics expertise really came in handy and they had trucks full of supplies ready to deliver to the region. ‘course, if they paid their employees more, maybe they’d be able to afford cars and could have gotten out of the region on their own. But let’s not blame all of the poverty and the disaster on one company.

Persian Metalwares

Persian silver vase
Something I picked up from a seller on eBay (he didn’t auction this piece, but sold it direct. Don’t worry eBay, I sent him the $ via PayPal so you get your cut, but yeah, it’s less than the double-taxation you normally take.) I’m so excited to get this piece, it looks beautiful. I have another piece, a brass platter that a seller in Texas is shipping to me. Perhaps I’m getting gouged on the prices, I have no idea what these are worth. But they’re worth the price I’m paying to me.

Lunar Pic

So this was shot out the back window in my dining room at about 6am (lately, I’ve been waking up at 4:30 every morning. Frustrating! But at least I haven’t been all that tired.)

This is the moon setting behind some trees in the suburbia where I live. The trees, in case you care, are 50-year-old ash trees planted when the tract was new (built for returning soldiers from WWII.)

I’m guessing the light fog / smog layer gives the moon that odd, cool ball of flame look. Dunno.

Human-powered centrifuge == news?

Ames has had a human-powered centrifuge for years, but BoingBoing.net (one of my favorite geek news sites) has an article today on a human-powered centrifuge that looks to take far more volume (a real premium inĀ  space.) I hope NASA isn’t paying for this design, as the one at Ames could certainly be used in space. But then I’m no life scientist so there may be some advantages to the other design?

Art addiction

After visiting the various Smithsonian museums in DC, particularly the Sackler, Freer, and Hirschorn, I’ve been on an art kick. While I’d love to buy from local dealers, rent in the valley is so high that it’s not cost-effective for artists to rent a storefront and those few art galleries in town tend towards the extremely expensive pieces or cheap junk.

Luckily, eBay acts as the great equalizer, and I’ve found a variety of really great pieces online at reasonable prices.

Art I’m particularly interested in:

Graffiti art, particularly paintings. Great lines, bright colors, what more could I ask for?

Chinese/Japanese lacquers, particularly Chinese cinnabar lacquerware.

Celadon pottery, particularly Korean celadon.

Persian damascene brass works.

…more later…
